Founded in 1964, UMOM is Arizona's larger provider of services for families experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to prevent and end homelessness using innovative strategies and housing solutions that meet the unique needs of each family and individual. With an annual operating budget of 18 million dollars, UMOM provides shelter, housing, and supportive services to youth, families, and individuals experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County. UMOM serves just over 12,000 unique individuals across all of our services annually, including those families receiving support at the Family Housing Hub.

Position Description:

The Government Grants Manager (GGM) will work closely with UMOM's Senior Leadership to develop and execute a government grant strategy that will support the successful implementation of UMOM's programs and services. To date, government grants make up nearly 60 percent of UMOM's funding portfolio. The GGM will be responsible for local, regional, and national government grant fundraising to support UMOM's work and growing budget.  As part of prospecting, the GGM will need to partner with the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams to help build rapport and relationships with all grant contacts. This includes: creating an annual government grant strategy in collaboration with the COO, CEO, and Senior Director of Operations; government grant prospecting; proposal planning and development; completing all grant writing for proposals; and once proposals are secured, completing the grant reporting process, in collaboration with key leaders in the Operations Team. This individual will demonstrate versatility and flexibility in the grant development process, collaborating as needed with key leaders in the organization, while owning the responsibility of the completed grant work product. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Government Grants Strategy & Writing

  1. Develop and execute an annual strategy for government grant writing to ensure UMOM raises the resources it needs for a balanced budget. This includes but is not limited to identifying all grants for renewals, tiered prospects of new funders, timelines, proposal amounts, and work flow for the year.
  1. Develop, prepare, and edit grant proposals for government grants.
  1. Develop expert knowledge of UMOM's programs and services to prepare accurate and persuasive funding requests and reports. Collaborate with the Program's Senior Leadership as well as the organization's Finance, Grants & Compliance, and Data & Evaluation Departments to obtain necessary data, information, and materials for proposal and attachment content.
  1. Prepare multiple, simultaneous proposals and reports for on-time submission under tight and shifting deadlines, while maintaining a consistently high standard of quality.

Grants Management and Prospecting

  1. Maintain a calendar of public grant proposals and reports to ensure on-time submission of all proposals and reports. Collaborate with the Programs, Grants & Compliance, and Data & Evaluation Departments to complete grant reporting and to ensure grant compliance as necessary.
  1. Research the funding requirements of potential new public funding sources and opportunities.
  1. Identify, evaluate and cultivate prospects for new government grants.
  1. Conduct research to develop and maintain knowledge of and expertise in policies and theories concerning homeless services. Conduct research to provide supporting information for grant proposals.

GENERAL DUTIES: Participate in Department meetings, All-Staff meetings, and other agency-wide meetings. Represent UMOM in a professional manner at events, public speaking activities or other functions as requested.

Qualifications and Competency Requirements:

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required'Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience, with at least 3 years of experience in relevant roles (e.g. grant writing, grant management, business development, non-profit positions)
  • Excellent research, organizational, and communication skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively
  • Experience working in any capacity with Government entities is a plus
  • Knowledge of non-profit/social sector and/or experience working with underserved or disadvantaged populations is a plus
  • Ability to develop strong relationships within a fast-paced, collaborative setting that values diverse opinions; enthusiasm for helping drive change as UMOM becomes a more data-driven organization

Computer skills:

  • High Proficiency with applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook

Compliance:

  • Valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card or the ability to obtain one
  • Valid AZ driver's license and a driving record that falls within UMOM's policy
  • 100/300 level of car insurance coverage (mileage reimbursement available)
